Rolwaling Valley Trek is in the isolated zone on the east-west side just below Mt. Gaurishankar (7145 m) towards the southern Tibetan border. Mt. Gaurishankar is known as Jomo Tersingma by Sherpas. It has two summits, the northern (higher) summit being called Shankar (a manifestation of Lord Shiva) and the southern summit being called Gauri ( a manifestation of Shiva’s consort – Parvati).
The Rolwaling Valley trek lets us witness the sacred Himalayan landscape and learn more about the Brahman, Chhetri, Gurung, Tamang, and Sherpa cultures. While trekking through the valleys of Rolwaling, we pass the beautiful farmland of Bhote Kosi and Sun Kosi valleys, the alpine valley, and the glacial lakes of the upper Rolwaling region.
The snow-fed glacial lake of Tsho-Rolpo Lake gives us a unique experience in this pristine valley of Rolwaling. At an elevation of 4850 m, it is one of the biggest glacier lakes in Nepal. The lake has a maximum length of 3.45km, a width of 0.5km, and an average depth of 55 meters.
Rolwaling Valley Trek begins with a scenic Kathmandu – Lhasa highway drive to the ancient trading town – Barabise. We trek through the dense, gloomy primitive forests and broad ridges backed with beautiful views of surrounding mountain peaks like Chekigo (6257m), Kang Nachugo (6737m), Chuyima Go (6258m), Ramdung Peak (5930m), and Parchemuche (6273m). The Rolwaling trek leads through one of Nepal’s most remote, beautiful, and unexplored parts in the Rolwaling region.
We adventure over dizzy suspension bridges, impressive gorges, and steep paths. Locals tell romantic stories about the Yeti. This valley is enriched with both Hindu and Buddhist Mythology. En route, we visit Bigu and Simi Gombas (monasteries). We can see wildlife because the trek is in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area.
The Rolwaling region is also famous for rock and ice climbing and mountaineering activities for international tourists. Tsho-Rolpo Lake is the main attraction for domestic tourists to Nepal. Rolwaling is in the middle of the Everest and Langtang regions. Trekkers or mountaineers can reach Everest or Langtang by following the Great Himalayan Trails, including the Rolwaling region.
