The mountain Kanchenjunga (8586m) is the 2nd tallest peak in Nepal and 3rd in the world. It lies in the Taplejung District, protected as the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, Nepal. In April 1997, the Government of Nepal declared the Kanchenjunga region as a gift to the Earth as part of WWF’s Living Planet Campaign.

Kanchenjunga region represents an extraordinary landscape with its unique floral and faunal diversity, breathtaking scenery, and rich cultural heritage. It is known as a remote trekking destination but has very scenic multi-day treks.

The Kanchenjunga region is famous for the Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp Trek.

How do you get to the trailhead of the Kanchenjunga region?

1) Kathmandu to Suketar (Taplejung) Airport by flight.
2) Kathmandu to Badrapur by flight and Ilam to Taplejung by bus.
3) Kathmandu to Birtamod to Ilam to Taplejung by bus.

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is home to the endangered snow leopard, red panda, and musk deer. Extensive juniper, Rhododendrons, and pure stands of Himalayan coniferous forest cover it.
