Poon Hill Trek

The Ghorepani’s Poon Hill Trek is a classic short trekking in the Annapurna region. It is an ideal trek for those with a brief holiday in Nepal. The trek lets you see villages, paddy fields, jungles, sunrise, and panoramic views of the Annapurna range. The trek has a good lodge network and always has passionate views of the Himalayas en route.

The journey begins with a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara and a 45-km/1-hour taxi ride to Nayapool. On the first day, we will walk for a few hours to Tikhedunga and climb the stone stairs to Ulleri village. From Ghorepani, we see Mt. Dhaulagiri I (8167m), South Annapurna, and Hiuchuli on the second day.

On the third day, we get up to Poon Hill (3210m) viewpoint early in the morning to enjoy the panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges with Sunrise. It is one of the best Himalayan viewpoints in the Annapurna region. Poon Hill gets some winter snow from January to February. It is the nearest place to play with wet snow in the winter. From Poon Hill, we trek to Gandruk Village in a day.

The Poon Hill Trek route takes us through the giant Rhododendrons trees that are colorful in the spring from mid-March to May. En route, we see many birds and Langurs (grey color monkeys). From Ghorepani, we walk through a dense forest of Rhododendrons and Pine trees, taking a different route to Gandruk village. From here, we can see the Sunset over the attractive mountain of Machhapurchhare (6993m).

On the four days, we will tour the old Gandruk village and visit the Gurung cultural museum in the morning. From Gandruk, we will travel to Pokhara by bus.

We will return to Kathmandu from Pokhara in five days by tourist bus. Before leaving Kathmandu, we will make a day tour of the Cultural Heritage sites.

Day to day Itineary:

Day 01: International Airport pick up.

We arrange the transfer from the International Airport to the Hotel and give a full trek briefing.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Pokhara flight and trek to Uleri 1960m/4hrs.

After breakfast, we go to the domestic airport and fly to Pokhara for 25 minutes. From here, we go to Nayapool, 45km/1hr by private van. We start our trek by following the Modi Khola to reach Birethati, where Annapurna hiking passes are checked. Leaving Birethanti, we continue our trek by following the Burundi Khola valley to reach Tikhedunga, where we have a lunch break. We climb up stone stairs through the terraced hillsides to reach Ulleri village. We see Mt. South Annapurna (7219m) en route.

Day 03: Ulleri to Ghorepani 2860m/4hrs.

Leaving Ulleri, we head up to Banthati. Then, we enter the Rhododendron forest and climb stone stairs through Nangithati to reach Ghorepani. From here, we see Sunset views over Mt. Dhaulagiri, South Annapurna, and Hiuchli.

Day 04: Ghorepani to Poon Hill to Gandruk 1960m/7hrs.

Before breakfast, we ascent to Poon Hill viewpoint 3210m to see the spectacular Sunrise over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Poon Hill is one of the best viewpoints of mountain vistas. Leaving Ghorepani, we head east by following a ridge to cross elevation 3150m, where we see close views of South Annapurna, Hiuchuli, and Machhapuchhare. From here, we head down through Pine and Rhododendron forest to Banthanti. We continue to walk to Deurali, descend to the small stream, and climb up to Tadapani, where we have lunch with superb views of South Annapurna and Machhapuchhare. From Tadapani, we descend through the largest Rhododendron forest to reach Gandruk village, the largest settlement of the Gurung ethnic.

Day 05: Gandruk To Pokhara by bus 3hrs.

We enjoy breakfast with views of South Annapurna and Machhapuchhare. Then, we tour the old Gandruk village and visit a cultural museum before we catch the bus to Pokhara. We arrive in Pokhara for lunch and see in the afternoon.

Day 06: Pokhara to Kathmandu by tourist bus.

Today, we travel back to Kathmandu from Pokhara by tourist bus. It takes about 6-7 hours.

Day 07: International Airport departure.

Our company representative will help you to transfer to the International Airport in time for the flight back home.

International flight tickets and Nepal tourist visa (you can obtain tourist visa upon arrival in Kathmandu Airport).

Please read carefully the cost, including and not including the above. All the meals are included with tea/coffee while on the trek. We do not include drinking or boiled water, which you can buy at the lodge; this is $1 to 2 per liter. You can take water-purifying tablets or Seripen for a cheaper solution. Wi-Fi, battery charge, and hot showers are omitted. Wi-Fi is $2 per card. The battery charge is $1 to 2 per hour per device (you can take a power bank for a cheaper solution). The gas shower is USD2 to 3 per head.

We insure trekking staff and provide warm enough equipment. We do our best for your safety, but we suggest you buy comprehensive travel insurance that can cover flight cancellation, medical treatment, and Helicopter rescue emergency evacuation.

Comfortable hiking boot. Three pairs of socks. Sandals.

Note: We have a down jacket and sleeping bag renting facilities for our clients. The rental fee is USD1 per sleeping bag and down jacket daily.
